About Ear Acupuncture/Acupressure
Ear acupuncture/acupressure is an evidence-based treatment for insomnia, stress, depression, withdrawal symptoms, and pain. It has been widely used in addiction care and mental health worldwide, particularly in its standardized form known as NADA.
However, it has increasingly been applied to various indications. Recent research shows promising results in alleviating menopausal symptoms, even in men, following hormone therapy for prostate cancer. Research has demonstrated that ear acupuncture sends signals to the brain via the vagus nerve and trigeminal nerve. Several brain centers are activated, and neurotransmitters and hormones are released, resulting in beneficial effects on stress, anxiety, worry, pain, and sleep problems.
Studies have shown that even seed patches provide the same symptom relief, so insertion of needles is not necessary. It is a matter of preference for the patient. The advantage of needles is that the patient/client can sit for a longer period (40 minutes) alone and truly have a timeout.
Paul Nogier, a French physician, developed ear acupuncture in the 1950s, describing it as a microsystem and reflex map of the ear. He did not connect it to the meridian system in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Ear acupuncture/pressure is also ear reflexology. There are described 200 points on the small ear. Absolutely fantastic.
And there are no dangerous side effects if it is used properly by well-trained ear acupuncturists.

How do i do the treatment?
After cleaning with an alcohol swab, I use a small ball probe to locate active points. Then, I insert thin acupuncture needles at the tender points. Alternatively, I may provide electrical stimulation. Another option is to apply a seed patch or permanent needles at the point, which is done after needle treatment to prolong the effect. Seed patches can remain for up to a week. In NADA ear acupuncture, I always use the same 5 points following a standard protocol.
